Oh yes, it’s that time of year again.
As we creep ever closer to Christmas, it’s the time of year when we all start thinking about the year ahead, and how we would like to use it. This spawns all sorts of New Year’s Resolutions – promises we make ourselves to improve our lives, commit to doing something we’ve been avoiding, or just to lose a little weight. Every year millions of people will gather on New Year’s eve to watch fireworks, to celebrate together and ring in the New Year by making these resolutions, and a lot of them are very, very similar.
But did you know that less than 25% of people actually stay committed to their resolutions after just 30 days? And of that 25%, only 8% of people accomplish them? This isn’t necessarily because their resolutions were unachievable, but because they didn’t have the right mindset to follow through with them. And that’s something you have the power to change, so that this year you can not only set a New Year’s resolution, but achieve it too.
Finding The Reason
The key to permanent, ongoing change it to do it for the right reason. Just making a resolution to follow the crowd, or because it’s ‘the thing you do at New Years’ while knowing full well you won’t follow through is a fruitless endeavour, and means you will ultimately fail. Most significant change in life is made based on a high emotion (either positive or a negative) – so the stronger the emotional attachment to the issue, the greater reason you have to change. While this can be a positive or a negative emotion, positive reasons for change are often the strongest and most successful.
For example if you are overweight, perhaps it is the thought of restoring your health, feeling great, running around with your kids etc. that is your reason to make this change. If this is strong enough, it will give you the drive to achieve your goals, especially through the tough times. Furthermore, once you reach your goal, the satisfaction of ‘living’ your desired end-result is a positive experience, therefore helping to make sure you never return to the old ways. By choosing a resolution with a powerful root, you are much more likely to succeed.
How Hypnotherapy Can Help
The power your brain and your mindset has over your actions and behaviour is really quite amazing. That’s why the most essential component of any success (in anything) is a strong belief that you will succeed, and this is where hypnotherapy can help you. Hypnotherapy can help you define what success looks like for you and what the real driver are behind the change, so your goal will be very clear from the start. It can be so difficult to imagine ourselves really healthy, in a new slim body, energetic, happy, educated and successful, etc. In hypnosis, you can visit your future self; you can find and redefine the results of the changes you wish to make. We can then help you to build the goal – to start experiencing it and making it real – bringing the vision of your shining future into the current moment. Your hypnotherapist can help you identify and work through issues that might be clouding your vision or casting shade on your future, such as past trauma of very low confidence, and ultimately help you to resolve the past. With the help of a skilled hypnotherapist you can revisit the past in hypnosis and see it in a different light, like a lesson, to change your perceptions and unhelpful beliefs and completely free yourself of them – leaving you free to achieve your future goals.
Not only that, but if your resolution involves a key behavioural change, then hypnotherapy can actually help you there too. Anything from losing weight, quitting smoking, biting nails, grinding teeth, or even longer-term issues like phobias or anxiety can all be helped by hypnotherapy. So with the support of a hypnotherapist you could not only set yourself up for success with the right mindset, but support yourself in following through with your resolutions.
